First Aid for Mental Health
This 6-hour qualification provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help.
Following this course, learners will know how to recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of substance abuse. They will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place and know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.
The course covers the following:
- Define mental health
- Understanding stigma
- Identify factors that affect mental health
- Roles and responsibilities of a First Aider
- Outline of advice to provide a person suffering a suspected mental health condition
- Know when to contact the emergency services
- Identify signs of stress
- How stress can be managed
- Effects of alcohol and drug abuse
- Outline negative consequences of substance abuse on a person’s work and lifestyle
- Demonstrate the application of the first aid action plan
- Key factors in providing a positive Mental Health culture in a workplace
- Know how to implement positive Mental Health Culture in the workplace
- Identify signs & symptoms for the following Mental Health conditions:
- Depression
- Suicide
- Psychosis
- Anxiety
- Self-Harm
- Eating Disorders
Assessment and Qualifications:
There is 1 written assessment paper and a practical demonstration of the First Aid action plan for Mental Health. Delegates must successfully pass all parts of the assessment.
You will receive a level 2 certificate in First Aid for Mental Health (England) or level 5 First Aid for Mental Health (Scotland)
Cost: £135 per Person
Costs are per person for one day of training. All mental health courses require a minimum of six delegates.
Additional information
Delegate Numbers:
There is a maximum of 16 delegates per course to meet the requirements for the qualification.
Minimum age of attendance is 16 years.
Duration: The course is held over 1 day of 6 hours minimum.
Infection control:
We have put in place extensive measures to ensure that our clients will be safe during our training and that together we stop the spread.
Refresher:
A refresher session is recommended annually.
Requalification:
Requalification is not currently a requirement
Breaks:
There are two 15-minute breaks and an hour lunch break.
Lunch is not provided, but there are teas and coffees provided throughout the day.
The Need for Mental Health First Aid
Each year approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition and at least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress which can stop people performing at their best. Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination and research has shown that a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers. The HSE guidance ‘First aid needs assessment’ refers to mental health in the workplace.
